Easiest thing is to call

I'm one person and I'm usually at the mill, so a phone call beats everything else. If I don't pick up it's because something loud is running — leave a message or send a text and I'll get back to you.

Slower than the phone, but it works.

Finding the place

About five miles north of town, off Route 20

The wood yard

The mill sits on a farm roughly five miles north of Charlottesville, just off Route 20. This is where lumber gets picked up and where tree crews drop logs — there's room for a triaxle to turn around.

Call for the address and directions. It's a working farm rather than a storefront, so I'd rather point you in properly than have you hunting for a sign that isn't there. One phone call and you'll find it easily.

To get a quote faster

Tell me five things

Most of the back-and-forth on a quote comes from missing details. If you can answer these up front I can usually price it on the first call.

  • Species — or just say what it's for and I'll suggest one
  • Dimensions — thickness, width, length. A cut list is ideal.
  • How much — piece count or board feet
  • Indoors or outdoors — this decides whether it needs kiln drying
  • When — and whether you're picking up or want it delivered

Not sure on any of it? Call anyway. Working that out is part of the job.

How orders run

Deposit, then sawdust

Orders take 50% up front with the balance at or before delivery. That covers anything needing work done to it — milling to your dimensions, kiln drying, surfacing or planing.

The exception is stock that's already cut, dried and sitting on the pile. If it's going out as-is, just pay when you collect it.

Pickup from the yard any time by arrangement. Local delivery available, and further out if the order justifies the drive.
